El Cholo has been serving Green Corn Tamales every Summer since the 1930s

vietnam house restaurant

Her take on the delicate steamed rice roll dish arrives filled with shrimp and pork; served with cucumbers, bean sprouts, ham and a drizzle of nuoc cham, it’ll leave you wanting to come back for more. This family-run pho shop with locations in Little Tokyo (recently rebranded as Vui Ve), Gardena and Alhambra offers a deceptively simple menu that packs flavor into excellent versions of Vietnam’s greatest culinary hits. Pho Ever’s approachable take on bun bo hue, tasty combination plates and cafe sua da (condensed milk coffee) are also worth an order—if you can tear yourself away from their delicious, flavorful bowls of pho.

Brodard Chateau

While the filet mignon that comes standard with every bowl is a cut above the rest, it’s Nguyen’s unparalleled broth that distinguishes her product from the dozens of pho hawkers in town. LA’s historic Chinatown plays host to some of the city’s finest Vietnamese cooking. Phở 87’s winding menu includes dozens of iterations of Vietnam’s iconic beef noodle soup, but the one to order is the pho dac biet that includes a bit of every beefy cut like brisket, tendon, flank, and tripe. Often imitated but never duplicated, the original Tan Cang Newport Seafood in this Santa Ana strip mall makes the best stir-fried lobster around. The signature lobster arrives piping hot, hacked into manageable bits, and ready for the taking.

Ba Lẹ Sandwiches

On the appetizer side, the restaurant offers well-executed creative takes on Vietnamese classics, from a delightful shrimp toast riff on goi cuon to a baby-back rib version of ram rang, or traditional caramelized short ribs. A handful of vegan-friendly items, including two kinds of plant-based pho, help round out the menu selection—and the all-around delicious offerings mean Camp Pho easily ranks as one of the best Vietnamese options on the Westside. A decade later, prolific South Bay chef Tin Vuong’s flavorful dishes still make for a delightful upscale-casual meal rooted in the fundamentals of Vietnamese cooking. Now with locations in Downtown, Redondo Beach, El Segundo and Irvine, the eclectic East-meets-West concept offers modern takes on bo luc lac, nem nuong and imperial rolls, caramelized shrimps, banh mi and even pho and chao (the latter two only at lunch). Not every dish completely lands, but the ambitious genre-bending menu, lively dining room atmosphere and a couple of standout dishes—we’re looking at you, escargot poppers—keep Little Sister top of mind whenever we’re in the mood for an elevated Vietnamese dining experience.

Pho Nguyen Hue

While pricier than most competitors (owing to the use of the restaurant’s eponymous American wagyu), true fans of beef phở will find the experience more than worth the splurge. Go beyond pho, banh mi and spring rolls with our comprehensive guide to the city's best Vietnamese eateries. Hidden away in the food court of Rosemead’s Square Supermarket lies Hien Khanh, a Little Saigon import that makes the very best Vietnamese desserts in town. Those unfamiliar with the genre may be a bit wary upon seeing legumes, seaweed, and root vegetables swimming in a sea of coconut milk, but there’s no need to hesitate because everything tastes stupendous.

Vietnamese meatballs (nem) are a curiously loud bunch that snap and squeak at first bite. Here, grilled pork meatballs and skewers are served on grand platters along with rice papers for wrapping and a forest of greens for garnishing. At peak hours, Chao Ca Cho Cu is home to the tantalizing scent of grilling onions, turmeric and fresh dill.

Tan Hong Mai specializes in banh cuon made the traditional way, steamed over mesh in fine sheets. The slightly opaque rice sheets come filled with minced pork and wood ear mushrooms, and served with fish sauce, beansprouts, and different proteins. Song Long’s cha ca Thang Long takes turmeric and ginger marinated catfish fillets and serves them on sizzling plates that emit a fragrant steam of dill and onion. Served with an extra funky mam nem, or fermented anchovy sauce, along with herbs and vermicelli noodles, the dish balances earthy, savory, sweet and tangy flavors.

For a family-style feast for two to four, order the dac biet cho ("special order") for a build-your-own summer roll affair that includes lettuce, three kinds of meat and ultra-thin shrimp egg rolls, plus a green mountain of herbs. While we’ve found better versions of bun bo hue, nem lui and the various regional rice cakes at South El Monte’s 5 Stars Hue, this nearby restaurant offers a few hard-to-find, delicious central Vietnamese dishes worthy of seeking out. For seafood lovers, there’s the com hen, a bowl of rice mixed with regular and miniature clams, sesame seeds, elephant ear (a type of celery-like vegetable), pork rinds, crushed peanuts and fresh herbs. Fragrant banana leaf-wrapped pieces of cha hue (Hue-style pork sausage) are sold by the piece, best dunked into the delicate, multilayered nuoc cham. We also recommend the Vietnamese-style papaya salad and the bun mit mam nem, a delicious rice vermicelli bowl topped with pork sausage, minced shrimp, jackfruit, peanuts and herbs. The fermented anchovy sauce served on the side gives the dish a pungent, but unforgettable flavor.

Location

Choose from glass noodles (mien ga) or rice noodles (pho ga) for a taste of Hai Phong, the northeastern port city where chef-owner Phan Tran originally hails from. You’ll also find amazing steamed chicken here, as well as Hainan-style chicken rice—byproducts of culinary influence from Vietnam’s northern neighbor. Beyond chicken, Tran also offers a mix of regional specialties and familiar standbys, including the best banh cuon in L.A.

Unlike other pho shops in the neighborhood, Ktown Pho excels in other areas, with excellent banh mi, combination plates and delicious fresh rolls whimsically named after all four seasons. Follow it up with the com hen — a bowl of steamed rice, baby clams, sesame seeds, and fresh herbs served with a light clam broth. For those in the mood for spice, there’s a house special spicy pho, plus chicken, veggie and shrimp pho varieties, but the main draw here is still the beef version. The cheapest option includes lean brisket, but you can also jazz up your bowl with Wagyu beef slices, beef belly or bone-in beef ribs for a few dollars more. Help yourself to toppings at the self-serve station by the cashier after you order and enjoy. The key to excellent Vietnamese vegetarian fare is a killer mock nuoc cham (fish sauce vinaigrette), and nobody makes it better than the folks at Thien Tam.

Across these less densely populated regions of Los Angeles, you'll come across hard-to-find delicacies that will transport you to the streets of Saigon, Hanoi and Hue, Central Vietnam's major culinary powerhouse. Not every single one offers pho, but those that don't offer the country's national dish offer more unfamiliar, but no less delicious, items we'd recommend with zero reservation. Find southern-style Vietnamese food at this perpetually busy, efficiently run, and solid-as-can-be restaurant. Come for the blistered cha gio stuffed with ground pork and woodear mushrooms, and stay for a bowl of pho, a platter of broken rice, or cool vermicelli noodles. Since 2018, this bright, airy strip mall eatery along Lincoln Boulevard has delighted Marina del Rey and Venice residents with a rich, dark brown pho with strong notes of anise, cloves and cardamom. Simmered for 72 hours (versus just 12 to 16 at other spots), Camp Pho’s namesake soup showcases the deeper, funkier but no less delicious side of Vietnam’s national dish.

The result is a thin crepe that’s crisp and delicate throughout with lacy, caramelized edges. Broken rice served with a plethora of proteins is what it’s all about at this long-standing restaurant. Toppings include shredded pork dusted in roasted rice powder, pork meatloaf, grilled shrimp paste, grilled pork, and more. From broken rice with all the fixings to noodle soups from every region, here now are the 21 essential Vietnamese restaurants in OC’s Little Saigon, ordered geographically from north to south. Choose from grilled pork, shredded pork with pork skin, or meat-stuffed tofu wrappers, and most importantly, don’t forget the fried egg to top it all off. This humble storefront (that also sells lottery tickets — don’t ask) might have Korean dramas with Vietnamese subtitles blaring from the TV and a surly looking Vietnamese lady taking your order.

Since 2003, this strip mall restaurant has quietly kept the South Bay fed on the kind of breadth of high-quality Vietnamese cuisine that wouldn’t be out of place in OC’s Little Saigon. You’ll find a deeply satisfying beef pho and the familiar Vietnamese takeout appetizers, but a step outside of your comfort zone yields solid versions of bo luc lac, broken rice combo plates and even the usually lackluster bun bo hue. A separate section offers Teochew-style egg noodle dishes (reflecting the Chinese ethnic group’s cultural influence in Vietnam). An expanded outdoor seating area and remodeled dining room have given Saigon Dish a more polished look and feel, but the brisk, no-frills service and weekday crowds showcase the fact that this busy spot in Lawndale hasn’t lost touch with its neighborhood roots. Broken rice reigns supreme at this San Gabriel spot located a stone's throw from Hawaii Supermarket.

A world of no-frills culinary delight awaits those who visit this cash-only strip mall restaurant in Alhambra. From the parking lot, you can already smell the heady, fragrant spices used in pho, but Nem Nuong Khanh Hoa is better known for its namesake grilled pork sausage served in fresh rice paper—a.k.a. Topped with shredded pork or dried shrimp, the delicate cakes made of rice and tapioca flour draw the subtle flavors out of their accoutrements, especially when doused in chili-spiked nuoc cham (fish sauce vinaigrette).

Once a subsistence dish cooked by Vietnamese rice farmers with leftover product, these soft (and now intentionally broken) grains accompany a bounty of proteins, pickled vegetables and aromatic pork broth at King Com Tam. Choose from various styles of beef, pork, chicken and shrimp for a lighter com tam fix, but the combination plates containing steamed egg loaf (cha trung hap) also offer the hard-to-find traditional side dish. For a lighter, more playful texture, King Com Tam's enormous menu includes banh hoi—molded squares of rice vermicelli—as well as the usual bun.

19 Best Vietnamese Restaurants in Los Angeles Eater LA

The bun cha, the region’s quintessential dish, comes with charbroiled pork patties and pork belly soaking in fish sauce. An order of the nem cua be, beautifully blistered crab and pork egg rolls, is an absolute must. This French-Vietnamese bistro is tucked into an already inconspicuous strip mall, but follow your nose — the scent of sizzling stone plates of garlic-butter filet mignon and lamb chops intensifies as one approaches this hidden gem. Khoi Hung’s rendition is a departure from the more black pepper-forward shaken beef dishes at institutions like Tan Cang Newport Seafood. Khoi Hung’s version comes draped in a buttery, rich gravy that cranks the umami up to 11, and is perfect with a bowl of rice.

21 Incredible Vietnamese Restaurants to Try in Orange County’s Little Saigon

Literally translating to "sizzling cake," the namesake dish of Banh Xeo Quan is a crepe-like delicacy originally from southern Vietnam. Deriving its bright yellow hue from turmeric, each half moon-shaped crispy pancake at this daytime-only Rosemead specialist comes stuffed with shrimp and pork, fish filet or a vegan-friendly mix of mushrooms and mung beans. Served with lettuce, herbs and nuoc cham, the banh xeo here is easily the best in Los Angeles. Since 2017, this tiny shop in Rosemead has churned out freshly made bowls of organic chicken pho—and the crowds that still come in daily reflect that quality hasn’t dipped in the slightest.

The Best Budget-Friendly Southern Thai Cuisine In Phuket

Other standouts include the escargot and Vietnamese steak frites served with herb butter. Here at this central Vietnamese restaurant, chef and owner Mai Tran prepares family recipes that she learned in her hometown of Thua Thien. The bún bò Huế  is fantastic dish, as are the bánh ít kẹp bánh ram  — two-story cakes comprised of shrimp-stuffed glutinous rice dumplings perched atop fried glutinous rice cakes. Brodard’s nem nướng cuon might just be the most famous dish in the neighborhood. Carefully tucked inside a rice paper wrapper is lettuce, a cucumber baton, fresh cilantro, pork sausage, and a tightly coiled deep-fried wonton.

Pho So 1

Mai Phung specializes in banh canh, a delightfully viscous noodle soup made with thick and rounded tapioca noodles in a pork and crab broth. Also good are the vermicelli rice noodles with grilled pork and egg rolls. We searched far and wide among Koreatown's many strip mall pho joints for the area’s best Vietnamese dining options, but none came close to Khanh and Helen Tan's pho shop hidden along a busy commercial stretch of Western Avenue. Though consistency and excellence aren't words we’d necessarily apply to every dish, Tan's above-average pho stands out from the crowd with a beautiful, deeply aromatic broth and high-quality toppings.

The Iron Man pho satisfies, while the warm and sweet ginger tofu “pudding” comes through for dessert. The turmeric-laced batter crisps up like no other while the plentiful fillings are balanced just so. Boulangerie Pierre & Patisserie is home to Little Saigon’s finest French-Vietnamese pastries, including airy baguettes and a pitch-perfect pâté chaud — a savory pastry filled with ground pork or chicken. Those unfamiliar with Vietnamese desserts may be a bit wary upon seeing legumes, seaweed, and root vegetables swimming in a sea of coconut milk, but it’s a refreshing experience that’s particularly crave-worthy during hot months. Pho Akaushi’s new sleek, modern digs are a departure from the original location inside the Saigon supermarket. It only takes one look at the extra-fine grease bubbles and a taste of that clean-yet-robust broth to know that Pho Akaushi hasn’t forgotten the attention to detail and labor-intensive hustle that got them here.

Kim Hoa Hue

Practically every table here has the cha ca thang long, a family-sized serving of the Hanoi dish of catfish marinated in turmeric. Less flashy is the must-order fish porridge, a ginger-inflected, brothy number that’s deeply satisfying on its own or with the optional quẩy, or savory fried breadsticks. The bread, impeccably fresh and made in-house at all hours of the day, provides an impressive canvas for the scratch-made pickles, pate, bologna, and head cheese. Linh Phuong Nguyen makes one of the city’s best bowls of southern-style pho at this worn-in restaurant straddling the border between Rosemead and South El Monte.

Find Thien Huong Restaurant tucked into the ground floor of Far East Plaza in Chinatown. The extensive menu runs the gamut, but regulars can’t resist the pho ga (chicken noodle soup) and the bun bo Hue (Hue-style beef and lemongrass noodle soup). Owner Phi Tran opened the restaurant to bring this southern Vietnamese specialty to the San Gabriel Valley. Banh xeo, which literally means “sizzling cake,” earned its name from the sound the batter makes when it hits the scorching pan.

Saigon Eden

It’s part of the charm of Ba Le, but the magic in their banh mi is in the bread — warm, crunchy with an ethereal airy crumb, it’s hands down one of the best values in food. Make sure to eat the sandwich quickly — that crumb doesn’t travel well, and you might spot a certain Eater writer eating one in his car in the parking lot. When it comes to bò bảy món, diners are served seven different beef preparations including spiced ground beef wrapped in betel leaves and beef porridge. Served alongside are a host of fresh vegetables, herbs, and rice papers for wrapping. It’s hard to find a bowl of chicken pho better than the ones made by Phan Tran at Pho Ga District. The bun mang vit, noodle soup with duck and bamboo shoots, is stellar as well.

Rice Field

Pho Daily’s namesake nourishing broth delivers flavor with minimal grease and plenty of herbs, while the summer rolls with pork sausage arrive with a tasty, high-quality peanut sauce. Beyond pho, there’s also a vast array of other common Vietnamese dishes, some more well-executed than others—making Pho Daily a great option for any and all late-night Vietnamese cravings and a solid takeout and delivery go-to for locals. This community-driven takeout spot in Silver Lake serves fresh, comforting food that’s so delicious (and budget-friendly), you’d be wise to order the whole menu, especially if it’s your first time there. Offering lighter snacks like fried shallot-topped grilled street corn and the area’s most delicious banh mi, chef-owner Uyên Lê strives to keep her vegan-friendly fast-casual fare affordable without compromising on ingredient quality or fair wages—not an altogether easy task. In practice, this means Bé Ù offers a smaller menu, though you can still find mouthwatering caramelized pork and eggs (thit kho kau), a refreshing cup of herbaceous rau má (pennywort juice) and even a hearty chicken-based rice porridge.

Chef and owner Uyên Lê takes great pride in every dish on the menu, but is particularly fond of the banh mi. The sandwiches come stuffed with lemongrass chicken, pork, and beef; try the chef’s favorite vegan sandwich filled with tofu and a house-made pate. Industriously prepared toppings like a great chả giò (Vietnamese-style egg rolls) and large grilled shrimp are just a few of the things that dress the restaurant’s chewy, thicker rice noodles. Bring it all together with a healthy pour of their sweet and savory nước chấm. The fish’s prized crispy skin, charred in some spots and golden throughout, gives way to moist and tender flesh imbued with honey and turmeric. Served on the side are herbs and lettuce, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber spears, vermicelli rice noodles, rice papers, and best of all, a tangy-sweet tamarind dipping sauce.

On the weekends, Le offers creative specials and rotating pastries by Lo Huang (@largwa), the onetime pastry chef at now-closed Pearl River Deli. For the last 30 years, this daytime sandwich counter with three locations (two in Rosemead, one in Alhambra) has served some of the best budget-friendly banh mi in Los Angeles. Though you can’t beat the price, the tender lemongrass charbroiled meats and soft tangles of pickled vegetables have kept generations of SGV locals from straying to other Vietnamese sandwich shops. Transparent slices of onion, strips of beef brisket and glistening cubes of beef tendon mark Pho So 1's delicious, murky broth with notes of charred onion and cloves. The meal is completed by a plate of garnishes that catches the light like an herbaceous still life, if you sit by the window at the right time of day. In general, as with Chinese cuisine, L.A.'s best Vietnamese joints pointedly skew suburban, from the deep recesses of the San Fernando Valley to the inland South Bay.

Banh it ram is one of Vietnamese cuisine’s great pleasures — little rice dough dumplings stuffed with shrimp and pork sit on top of an airy, crunchy fried rice dough base. Don’t sleep on the mi quảng (a Central Vietnamese noodle dish of wide, flat noodles and various toppings with fresh vegetables and herbs), either. Sure, we may not have the culinary riches of Garden Grove or Fountain Valley, but L.A. County more than holds its own thanks to the San Gabriel Valley, where many immigrant-run Vietnamese shops offer amazing regional specialties you won't find at your standard neighborhood pho shop.

While Orange County’s Little Saigon is the epicenter Vietnamese food in Southern California, Los Angeles can certainly hold its own when it comes to steaming bowls of pho, generously stuffed banh mi, and herb-filled spring rolls. From vegan Buddhist fare at Vinh Loi Tofu in Reseda to northern Vietnamese hits at Pho Ngoon in San Gabriel, here now are 19 fabulous Vietnamese restaurants to try in Los Angeles. This elegant French Colonial-style building stands in the middle of a well-heeled district in the vibrant city centre. The team elevate traditional Vietnamese cooking with modern twists, in tasty dishes such as duck noodle soup, juicy chicken breast, and truly delicious silken bean curd dessert.

The freshly made French rolls and crispy, chewy baguettes at this no-frills, cash-only deli in Rosemead take the top spot for the overall best banh mi in Los Angeles (though for chargrilled lemongrass pork specifically, I prefer the one at Banh Mi My Tho across the street). With either style you choose, the bread comes nicely warmed and generously slathered with housemade pate and mayonnaise, particularly on the banh mi dac biet, the trio of cold cuts by which Vietnamese sandwich shops are judged. The housemade bread makes every bit of difference here; Hue Thai’s version skips cucumbers but piles on the jalapeno slices and pickled vegetables. While you’re at it, I recommend picking up some summer rolls, banh beo (savory steamed tapioca rice cakes) or a few trays of Vietnamese sweets to take home.

Order the tender bò lúc lắc (Vietnamese shaking beef) for the complete surf and turf experience. For the past three-and-a-half decades, crowds have descended upon this shop for tremendous bowls of pho dac biet brimming with brisket, tripe, and beef meatballs. Fixings can be added and subtracted based on individual tastes, but the broth — rich from long-simmered oxtails and fragrant from charred onions and star anise — is universally slurpable. Owner and chef Kevin Tran makes fresh tofu each day for his savory and sweet vegan fare.

Sojourner Truth Quotes, Facts & Speech

sojourner truth house

During her time with the Van Wengers, Isabella successfully sued for the return of her son, Peter, whom Dumont had illegally sold to an owner in Alabama. After a profound religious experience, she became a devout Christian and began to preach. She and Peter moved in 1829 to New York City, where she worked for and with two Christian evangelists over more than a decade.

She was with these upper room groups”—prayer revival meetings that started in an upper room of Manhattan’s North Reformed Dutch Church and then spread all over the city. Truth moved in and out of spiritualist circles, befriending people who sought communication with the dead. Critics derided her as a “negro wench” and mocked her insights as ridiculous pretense. As her renown increased, the media amassed a vast collection of anecdotes, brimming with rhetorical brilliance. Her very quotability and array of interests were both her boon and her bane. It’s hard to capture the breadth of a woman who straddled various movements for decades—much easier to remember her for a four-word quote she almost certainly never said.

"Their children are not talking, not trusting. They're sad and depressed." "She's steady and quiet, strong, but compassionate. She speaks the truth and has a great sense of humor." For the last 30 years, Grimes-Johnson has been opening the door to Sojourner Truth House and helping women change their lives by offering safety, counseling, comfort and a welcoming and warm spirit. Truth moved to New York City in 1828, where she worked for a local minister. By the early 1830s, she participated in the religious revivals that were sweeping the state and became a charismatic speaker. In 1843, she declared that the Spirit called on her to preach the truth, renaming herself Sojourner Truth.

Fifty-year-old Cory McLiechey of Grand Rapids, Michigan, plans to attend the plaza’s opening. He’s a fifth-generation grandson who founded a nonprofit called Descendants of the Truth. Though Allen and McLiechey published books within months of each other—and both are descended through Truth’s daughter Sophia—they didn’t know each other before their respective works came out.

In the same year, she was introduced to abolitionism at a utopian community in Northampton, Massachusetts, and thereafter spoke in behalf of the movement throughout the state. In 1850 she traveled throughout the Midwest, where her reputation for personal magnetism preceded her and drew heavy crowds. She supported herself by selling copies of her book, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, which she had dictated to Olive Gilbert. In 1844, Truth joined the Northampton Association of Education and Industry in Northampton, Massachusetts. Founded by abolitionists, the organization supported a broad reform agenda including women's rights and pacifism. Isabella made her way to New Paltz, New York, where she and her daughter were taken in as free people by Isaac and Maria Van Wagenen.

In 1875 she retired to her home in Battle Creek, where she remained until her death. After going to court to recover her son in 1828, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man. Sojourner Truth was born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree in 1797 in Ulster County, New York. She escaped slavery in 1827 and took her new name – Sojourner Truth – in 1843 before embarking on a path to preach for emancipation. After meeting Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1850, Truth began to passionately advocate for women’s rights. Throughout her life, Truth fought bravely against racial injustices and spoke up for women’s suffrage.

Neely was a cruel and violent master who beat the young girl regularly. She was sold two more times by age 13 and ultimately ended up at the West Park, New York, home of John Dumont and his second wife Elizabeth. Thus began a long string of residence in religious households or communities. These groups were forged in the foment of the Second Great Awakening, when idiosyncratic Christian sects abounded. “And then she was a perfectionist”—a religious persuasion in which people believed they could become free of sin.

In 1829, she moved to New York City with Peter to work as a housekeeper for evangelist preacher Elijah Pierson. She was the first Black woman to sue a white man in a United States court and prevail. After the New York Anti-Slavery Law was passed, Dumont illegally sold Isabella’s five-year-old son Peter. With the help of the Van Wagenens, she filed a lawsuit to get him back.

This means that our clients are housed first and then they are encouraged to address the issues that might have contributed to or caused their chronic homelessness. New clients come to the Gateway program through referrals from local shelter providers. We work with clients to find the right housing for them within the limits of the funding that is available. Participants of the Gateway program work towards goals of achieving and maintaining permanent housing, achieving greater self-determination, and increasing their income and non-cash benefits.

The words come tumbling out as each of the women describes why she stayed and why she left and sought refuge at the Sojourner Truth House for battered women and their children. The voices of the 10 women sitting around the circular tables at Sojourner Truth House are edged in sadness and pain as they describe the physical, mental and emotional hurt they endured at home, where love turned into abuse and violence. The U.S. Treasury Department announced in 2016 that an image of Sojourner Truth will appear on the back of a newly designed $10 bill along with Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul and the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession.

This event prompted Truth to leave the sect in 1835.[32] Afterwards, she retired to New York City until 1843. The Sojourner Truth Library is located at the State University of New York New Paltz, in New Paltz, New York. In 1970, the library was named in honor of the abolitionist and feminist. While always controversial, Truth was embraced by a community of reformers including Amy Post, Wendell Phillips, Garrison, Lucretia Mott and Susan B. Anthony — friends with whom she collaborated until the end of her life. The famous phrase would appear in print 12 years later, as the refrain of a Southern-tinged version of the speech.

On May 29, 1851, a woman asked to address the attendees of the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in Akron. She cut a striking figure, close to six feet tall even without her crisp bonnet. When you meet Lanonya and see the confidence and strength that beams from her face, you would never know that she was once a homeless mother of four. In the not-so-distant past, during long, difficult nights in a shelter in Calumet Township, she remembers feeling overwhelmed and unprepared for the journey back to being housed.

The woman whom history remembers as Sojourner Truth was born Isabella Baumfree in 1797. Her parents, James and Elizabeth Baumfree, were slaves on an estate in Ulster County, New York, north of New York City. In 1815 she bore her first child, a daughter, to a slave named from a neighboring farm whose owner forbade them to marry. Two years later Isabella's owner compelled her to marry one of his own slaves, with whom she had a son and three daughters. In 1851, Truth joined George Thompson, an abolitionist and speaker, on a lecture tour through central and western New York State. In May, she attended the Ohio Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, where she delivered her famous extemporaneous speech on women's rights, later known as "Ain't I a Woman?".

Truth was born Isabella Bomfree in Dutch-speaking Ulster County, New York in 1797. Born into slavery, her enslavers bought and sold Truth four times, and subjected her to harsh physical labor and violent punishments. In her teens, she was united with another enslaved man with whom she had five children, beginning in 1815. In 1827—a year before New York’s law freeing enslaved people was to take effect—Truth ran away with her infant Sophia to a nearby abolitionist family, the Van Wageners. The family bought her freedom for twenty dollars and helped Truth successfully sue for the return of her five-year-old-son Peter, who was illegally sold into slavery in Alabama.

Beginning in 1868, she spoke all around the East Coast for several years on the subjects of abolition and women's rights; she also unsuccessfully sought federal land grants for former slaves. She returned to Battle Creek, where she had bought a home in 1867, and spent many of her remaining years preaching and lecturing. On November 26, 1883, she died at her home, and she was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek. In 1843 she left New York City and took the name Sojourner Truth, which she used from then on. Obeying a supernatural call to “travel up and down the land,” she sang, preached, and debated at camp meetings, in churches, and on village streets, exhorting her listeners to accept the biblical message of God’s goodness and the brotherhood of man.

A committee of women and men, along with local groups, kept her vision afloat. In 2019, they revived the statue proposal for the 2020 centennial of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the vote. The group secured the assistance of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, along with Akron stakeholders and national experts in public history. This May, the Sojourner Truth Legacy Plaza, a 10,000-square-foot park with a six-foot statue of Truth, will open just steps from the former site of the Akron church.

This policy is in furtherance of the goal of providing affordable housing to low-income persons regardless of disability and in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local law. "The last mention I see of Harmonia on maps of the period is in 1906. By that time there were only just a few scattered buildings," Ailes said. During Tuesday's event, Ailes presented historical documents about the property and Truth, and Denso showcased educational placards honoring her impact on American history. The Truth home site discovery event wrapped up Denso's Black History Month celebration across sites in the United States. Finding a small piece of history connected to Truth was the driving force of the search of her original home in the area.

His owners shuttled him between extended family and eventually freed two other elderly slaves to take care of him. “Many Americans are like that, who move through phases in their belief history,” said Painter, reflecting on the 19th century. “But the big thing, I think, was that she spent so much of her religious time with non-Black people.

Abolition and Women's Rights

Kathie Stolpman, the former director of Sojourner, and other staff members surrounded her with support, she said. "This job fed me physically by putting bread on the table, and spiritually," she said. "There have been ups and downs, like a roller coaster. For the women and children, this is an emotional journey. You have to be careful of burnout." Finally, she answered a newspaper ad for a family advocate at the shelter in 1983. Dolly Grimes-Johnson, the director of the shelter, leads the discussion.

As the two of them talked, they realized they shared the idea of opening a center in Gary to provide a safe and welcoming place for clients. Sojourner Truth House is a ministry of hope and help for homeless and at-risk women and their children sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. Through hospitality, advocacy, integrative services and collaboration, participants improve their quality of life and that of the community in a safe, trusting environment. Advertisements for her talks sometimes drew supporters by emphasizing that she was old and rendered disabled by slavery. An injury to her right hand—which she often concealed in those photographic cards she sold—was her master’s excuse for extending her enslavement, demanding that she make up her lost work when she should have been freed.

History

Truth died at her home in Battle Creek, Michigan, on November 26, 1883. She is buried alongside her family at Battle Creek's Oak Hill Cemetery. True to her broad reform ideals, Truth continued to agitate for change even after Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation. In 1865, Truth attempted to force the desegregation of streetcars in Washington by riding in cars designated for white people. Truth dictated her recollections to a friend, Olive Gilbert, since she could not read or write.

When the Civil War started, Truth urged young men to join the Union cause and organized supplies for Black troops. After the war, she was honored with an invitation to the White House and became involved with the Freedmen’s Bureau, helping the formerly enslaved find jobs and build new lives. While in Washington, DC, she lobbied against segregation, and in the mid 1860s, when a streetcar conductor tried to violently block her from riding, she ensured his arrest and won her subsequent case. In the late 1860s, she collected thousands of signatures on a petition to provide formerly enslaved people with land, though Congress never took action. Nearly blind and deaf towards the end of her life, Truth spent her final years in Michigan. The most circulated version of her speech—published by the conference chair Frances Gage 12 years later—quoted Truth as repeating the question “Ar’n’t I a woman?

In the course of evaluating and responding to a reasonable accommodation request, the HumanGood Community will seek to engage in a process of dialogue and joint problem solving with applicants and residents. Sojourner's primary goals are to ensure the safety of victims of family violence and to provide a pathway out of violence for victims and abusers through opportunities to make positive and lasting changes for themselves and their children. Sojourner's mission is to transform lives impacted by family violence. Sojourner provides crisis housing, system advocacy and support to people who are impacted by family violence. "What is so wonderful is identifying the properties that she owned. A previous slave that was able to own three or four properties. She's a a self-made woman," Rickman said.

Although Truth pursued this goal forcefully for many years, she was unable to sway Congress. In 1850, Truth spoke at the first National Women's Rights Convention in Worcester, Massachusetts. She soon began touring regularly with abolitionist George Thompson, speaking to large crowds on the subjects of slavery and human rights. The state of New York, which had begun to negotiate the abolition of slavery in 1799, emancipated all enslaved people on July 4, 1827. Various details in Gage's account, however, including that Truth said she had 13 children (she had five) and that she spoke in dialect have since cast doubt on its accuracy. Contemporaneous reports of Truth’s speech did not include this slogan and quoted Truth in standard English.

In 1856, Truth was invited by Battle Creek Quakers to attend a Friends of Human Progress meeting. In June 1857, she purchased an acre of land on the edge of the village of Harmonia, which she called home until moving to 38 College St. in Battle Creek in 1867. Ailes spoke at the Denso facility on Tuesday as the company helped commemorate the discovery at an event that included local dignitaries, Denso employees as well Sojourner Truth historian and reenactor Donna Rickman of Battle Creek. We know that because of the location of the larger-than-life statue of the pioneer greeting visitors to the downtown area of the town she called home. In that first year of working at the shelter, Grimes-Johnson said, she had her own personal experience with an abusive relationship.

Grocery store in Charlotte to offer international foods

g mart charlotte nc

Good location and great selection of foods from all over the globe. I also like the little restaurants in the store too. Awesome place for all of your international food needs... Asian, Latin, Caribbean, middle eastern! The fruit, vegetables and meat selection are amazing! Fresh vegetables, korean appliances, a small food court area, free food samples cooked.

Pineville

"We're trying to create a cultural hub," Han said. "There's going to be language classes, cooking classes for customers that might not be familiar with some of our ingredients." For the latest breaking news, weather and traffic alerts, download the WCNC Charlotte mobile app. Everything was best fresh, and because I overdid it, not everything was enjoyed at its best, but I will be adding the bakery to my future trips to Super G. The shrimp scallop dumplings offered up more textures to get hooked on with a chewy rice paper-style wrapping.

Location

Once things are up and running, Han said another goal is to partner with local organizations to host international events and festivals in their parking lot. A 25,000 square foot food hall will serve authentic Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Indian and Japanese cuisines, to name a few. Peter Han, one of the owners of Super G Mart, said many customers drive by their soon-to-be third location in Pineville.

Each aisle is notated by country and if you want the best selection of fruits and vegetables, this is your place. They had items I'd never seen before. Purchased the kimchi that was made in the back and really loved it. Can't wait to go back when they are fully stocked. They do have a rewards program like many groceries stores do, And you may need it because the only downside is the shelf products are not quite affordable. Especially the snack aisle.

Hong Kong Bakery

We enjoyed the bouncy, fluffy dough of the bun. Such a good grocery store. You can come here just for the food.

Compared to the Independence Blvd location it is much nicer, newer, cleaner, and more spacious. There is a food court being built that is not quite ready yet but should have awesome food. They carry many hard to find items as well as some regular grocery store items but you'll be paying more for the convenience. Overall a great store that I look forward to visiting more often. The unexpected side effect of this whole trip was that I left inspired to use grocery halls to their full potential.

At Super G Mart, we strive to bring you the convenience of your international grocery needs all in an afternoon trip to one of our three locations in the Carolinas. The "G" stands for global, so Super G Mart will carry Caribbean and Latin foods, in addition to plenty of hard-to-find Asian ingredients. Fish will be sourced locally, as well as flown in. There will also be a 16-foot double-decker live fish tank.

The taro was good for a sweet option that was a bit earthy. I think the egg tart and Pork Sung were a bit out of my comfort zone, but we were glad to have explored new options just the same. The almond cookie was a bit like biscotti in texture and paired nicely with some hot tea. Super G Mart is the largest international supermarket in North Carolina with spices, produce, grocery, and household items popular from all around the world. We offer a global experience as our customers travel across aisles and aisles of international groceries and household items. I caught up with a friend and recharged myself with the above lunch after a solid hour of serious shopping.

I am too familiar with the udon (12.99) and bibimbap (13.99) and other generally excellent offerings at Korean Restaurant and I would recommend checking them out. On this visit, however, I focused on Honey Buns and Hong Kong Bakery to get some dishes and baked goods I wasn’t as familiar with - though I am always craving sticky rice in lotus leaves. Hopefully, you are convinced to visit this huge international market in North Carolina. If you have been to Super G Mart, please tell us about a purchase in the comments below.

I came across a few items that were expired, so double check the dates. Finding go-to Asian supermarkets made me begin to feel at home in Charlotte, and Super G Mart is a top-tier choice. With the opening of a new location in Pineville, I decided to visit.

It's going in the building that used to be a Big Kmart. — While Charlotte has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, a North Carolina grocery retailer is also expanding. These are not everyday items you would normally find at your neighborhood grocery.

Still, They are comparable to smaller Asian markets. The 108,000 square foot space will also allow for a roomier layout with wider aisles. Han said, "We're an international grocery store, so we want customers to feel like they're traveling through different regions at every aisle that they go to." I got to try a wide variety of treats for a great price. Here are my recommendations if you want to do the same. The buns with garlic and hot dog were the winners here and were enjoyed with breakfast and earned me some nice relationship brownie points.

The Korean-owned Super G Mart on Independence Boulevard has already seen its customer base increase, and the owners believe now is the time to go big. I’m excited to check out the new cafeteria at the Pineville location when it opens in spring 2023 and I’ll be ready to share more insight when I do. The influence on my cooking style can’t be overstated. It’s a love that’s only gotten stronger with time. Meeting someone who loves and appreciates the spice/fish sauce/Fabulouso scented destination is an exciting indicator of a potential kindred spirit. It’s one of my favorite day-off adventures.

For the last few weeks, I’ve also been trying to create the flavors and dishes I crave by making things like cold soba noodles, seaweed salad, and miso soup at home. Plus, I’ve had plenty of great ramen and dumplings ready to go for days I don’t feel like cooking. Im so happy I finally drove to this international market. They had a lot of items to choose from. I was happy to find various fresh herbs, meats, vegetables, beverages, and baked goods that are unavailable in my area.

I started eating a lot of food from Asia because I had excellent access to it . In Buffalo, I lived within a mile of four international markets, an international cafeteria/food hall, and multiple Pho, Burmese, Thai, and Vietnamese restaurants. These immigrant-owned spots were cornerstones of my working-class neighborhood. They shaped the culture of food exploration available to me in my early twenties. This is the new Super Gmart located in Pineville, NC.

A look at Mike Johnson and the troubled history of Republican speakers : NPR

donald trump speaker of the house

Aside from Trump, Representative Jim Jordan has already expressed his interest in being the next speaker and has received some support, including from Representative Matt Gaetz. While some Trump acolytes within the House GOP have openly expressed their willingness for Trump to take the gavel, the former president seems ambivalent based on his presidential prospects and being inundated with myriad legal cases. Some members have suggested that former president Donald Trump should pursue the speakership, at least on an interim basis. The U.S. Constitution does not require the House speaker to be a member of the chamber. "The idea for some that Donald Trump could become the speaker of the House is almost as frightening as the idea of him becoming president again," said Democratic strategist Karen Finney.

Hern is making calls to gauge interest in him running for speaker

"Can you just imagine Nancy Pelosi having to hand that gavel to Donald J. Trump?" mused Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., a vocal Trump loyalist, when he spoke to a crowd in Iowa this summer. "She didn't like when that Jan. 6 guy was sitting in her chair in her office. She is sure not going to like seeing Donald Trump sitting in her chair." Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones said Trump should be put forward for the job as a “litmus test on these Republicans” in the House—to see who will stand with him. “The only candidate for Speaker I am currently supporting is President Donald J. Trump,” MAGA bomb-thrower Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia tweeted.

America's Car Insurance Crisis Is Getting Worse

Buck said Sunday that he is not supporting a candidate until Republicans reach an agreement on government spending. Lawmakers last month passed a temporary deal to avoid a government shutdown, but the nation will face a shutdown again next month if Congress can’t come up with a longer-term spending deal. On Tuesday, Nehls was not among the rightwingers who voted to remove McCarthy.

Watch: Meet the Republicans who are Trump's likely successors

Since McCarthy has vowed not to run again for the speakership, many House Republicans and conservative commentators have thrown Trump's name into the conversation. The Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy aside from Gaetz were Andy Biggs of Arizona, Ken Buck of Colorado, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Eli Crane of Arizona, Bob Good of Virginia, Nancy Mace of South Carolina and Matt Rosendale of Montana. Donald Trump has broken his silence about the currently vacant speaker position in the House of Representatives. Saying no would anger their MAGA base, but saying yes would risk turning off swing voters who are exhausted with the former president. And then there's the appeal of State of the Union night, when he would get to stand behind Biden, just like the current House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., stood behind Trump when he was president. "Well, I've heard the talk and it's getting more and more, but it's not something that I would have considered. But it is — certainly there's a lot of talk about it," the former president said.

Former New York Assistant Attorney General Tristan Snell wrote on X that House Republicans' own rules require a leader to step aside if indicted for a felony of two-plus years of prison. House Republican conference rule 26 says a member of the Republican leadership must vacate his or her position if they have been indicted on felony charges that carry sentences of two or more years of imprisonment. The speakership is a job filled with constant tasks both big and small. "It requires that you actually get to the office at a reasonable hour and deal with the kinds of factional disputes that he would rather fuel, rather than settle," said C.

Yesterday, he was making calls seeking to shore up support for a bid to succeed McCarthy, two lawmakers who have spoken with him said. He also huddled privately with members of the 25-person Texas GOP delegation — the largest in the Republican Conference. Two days after he was ousted, the McCarthy nameplate outside his old office still has not come down. "Jim Jordan is the definition of a solid conservative and a truly effective leader, and I am proud to publicly express my strong support for him to become the next Speaker of the House," Hageman wrote on the social platform X. Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., who defeated Liz Cheney in the GOP primary for Wyoming's congressional seat last year, said she supports Jordan for speaker. NBC News reported today that Trump is considering a visit to the U.S.

Wright had only been in the job a little over two years at the time. Longworth's successor, John "Cactus Jack" Garner of Texas, left the office after just over a year to be Franklin Roosevelt's first vice president. Gingrich managed to restore many of the powers of the speakership but clashed repeatedly with Clinton and even with Republican leaders in the Senate.

Does the Speaker of the House Need To Be a Member of Congress?

That higher threshold vexed McCarthy in January, when it took him 15 rounds and a lot of political capital to win the coveted gavel. The House GOP conference will have a meeting Monday evening as members wrestle with who to elect as speaker. On Tuesday, House Republicans will host their own private forum to hear pitches directly from the candidates. Then on Wednesday, Republicans will hold their closed-door, secret-ballot election for speaker. Once someone wins a simple majority of the 221 GOP lawmakers, that person will become the party’s nominee. Johnson is the sixth Republican elevated to the speakership since 1994, the year the party won its first House majority and elected a speaker of its own for the first time in 40 years.

Trump endorses key Capitol Hill ally, Jim Jordan, for House speaker

After ousting a House speaker for the first time in history — and watching another candidate drop out — Republicans are scrambling to rally around a replacement, not an easy task at a time when the party is deeply fractured. If the Republicans take the House back in the 2022 midterm elections, they get to pick a speaker, and there's no requirement that the speaker has to be an elected representative. After Kevin McCarthy failed to win enough votes to become House speaker on Tuesday, former President Donald J. Trump held a call with Mr. McCarthy and Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, one of the key Republican members of Congress blocking Mr. McCarthy’s bid.

After Trump left office, party leaders still indulged his fantasy that he had “really” won the 2020 election. Attempts to substitute Ron DeSantis or Nikki Haley as the 2024 nominee sputtered and failed. Asked whether Wednesday was a realistic time frame for choosing a speaker, Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., who is serving temporarily in the role, told reporters he would "have an announcement from conference on a schedule today." But that GOP nominee still must receive 217 votes — a simple majority of the full House of Representatives — to be elected speaker on the House floor.

Even if that threshold were to change to three members, or five, the blockade of opposition to Jordan this week has shown plenty of political will among centrist Republicans, enough to force a vote if Speaker Trump were to seriously step out of line. The American public wouldn’t have to wait around for the next presidential election, or for yet another doomed-to-fail impeachment. Additionally, it’s possible that at least one of the reasons Trump is running for president is to keep himself out of prison. If he’s convicted of any of the counts of criminal conduct he faces, he’ll want someone in the White House who’s friendly to the idea of a pardon. Right now, he’s betting on himself, but a wobbly dead-heat rematch might not be as sound as, say, a Haley nomination, at least according to those polls. As House speaker, Trump could whip the political clout of an entire conference behind the candidate most likely to beat Biden (in exchange for assurance of pardon, presumably).

He also got strong support in the Senate, where even an outright majority of Republicans voted for the aid on Tuesday. The package was signed into law by President Biden the following day. Just such a "motion to vacate the chair" was filed against Johnson in March by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. But Greene has yet to make the motion "privileged," which under the rules would necessitate a vote within two days. To critics, Trump’s preoccupation with crime is a racial dog whistle.

The business soon became involved in variety of projects, including hotels, resorts, residential and commercial building, casinos, and golf courses. When questioned on whether he himself was interested in running for the position, McHenry just shook his head and sighed. But hours after announcing the forum, it was canceled when all three men said they would not participate. Two sources familiar with the matter confirmed said that Scalise and Jordan spoke and agreed it would not be a good idea.

In January, Gaetz voted for Trump as House Speaker during one of the rounds of voting. "This week, when the U.S. House of Representatives reconvenes, my first order of business will be to nominate Donald J. Trump for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives," Nehls said in a statement. "President Trump, the greatest President of my lifetime, has a proven record of putting America First and will make the House great again." Party rules would need to be modified to allow Trump to serve, which would again require a simple house majority.

Diana Schaub, a political science professor at Loyola University Maryland, has argued that the framers of the Constitution probably didn’t think anyone would ever try to elect a non-member. So there is at least a chance the Supreme Court might weigh in and rule the move illegitimate, if Trump actually went for it. And now, after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s historic leadership implosion following an unprecedented vote for his ouster led by right-wing firebrand Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, some in the right-wing political system are saying Trump is the man for the job.

They lost the Senate in 2021 because Trump fatigue cost them two seats in Georgia. They lost Senate seats and governorships in 2022 because they put forward Trump-branded candidates such as Blake Masters and Kari Lake in Arizona and Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania. Here is the issue on which traditional Republican belief in U.S. global leadership clashes most directly with Trump’s peculiar and sinister enthusiasm for Vladimir Putin’s Russia. And on this issue, the traditional Republicans have now won and Trump’s peculiar enthusiasm got beat.
